I ran across a yellow ware bowl in an antique mall. It is a mixing bowl and about 9-11" across. It is the older type with the wide band around the top. It is decorated with curves in the clay around the bowl and on the rim. One side of the rim was curved out to make a pour spout and the other side, just under the band has an indention for gripping. The bottom I think was square and it has USA imprinted in the clay tho you can barely see it. I didn't purchase it as they were asking $125. I have searched all night and cannot find anything about one with a pour spout. I think I will go back and get it tomorrow. Just thought you might know something about them. Thank you for the help. I have 4 bowls that fit inside one another. The smallest is 5 1/2" across the top, the rest each about an inch bigger in diameter than the next. I don't know if they are yellow ware. They are pink on the outside with a gray/blue color around the bottom coming about an inch up from the bottom. The inside of each bowl is a butter color. Each bowl has a cobalt blue design of a single flower with leaves (perhaps wild lupine, same design on each bowl). They are unmarked except one bowl has handwriting on the bottom under the glaze that says "Carla" and "W Chester" and more that I can't read. The glaze on the bowls doesn't come all the way to the bottom in some places, very crude. I would love to know the maker and value.

I have a set of five yelloware bowls. (I believe originally there may have been a sixth in the set?) No mark on the bottom. Bowls are primitive-looking, with 2 sets of stripes, blue/pink/blue on each. They range in size from 10 1/2" diameter down to 5 1/4" diameter. I have a photo if that would help. I would like to know if I should be concerned about lead in the glaze. Also, if I decide to sell them, should I sell them individually or as a set? I have a very old yellow ware set I was told was a tavern set, consisting of a pitcher 4 "mugs" or steins (no lids) and a large lidded "pretzel" jar. It is marked with an H in a circle on the bottom and the number 492. The center section of each piece is a group of people sitting together outside with mugs on the table homes in the background and a dog on the side. The decorated area is a brownish color whereas the top and bottom are the typical yellow ware color. Wondering if you had any information on the age or maker or what the set is worth. Or where I could start searching. (all in good shape except one of the mugs was broken and glued and a large chip remains on top) Also is there any way to repair the one that has the large chip? Thanks Carol

Hi Marcia; I find your questions and answers interesting but am anxious to learn more about many of my OHIO pottery pieces. Many of these were inherited from my husband's family in northeast MO. The item I am checking on is a STAR Fire Clay Acid Proof bowl. As far as I can tell, this is yelloware. It is approximately 10" diameter at the opening and 6" diameter on the bottom. It has been glazed black (or very dark brown) inside. It has a pattern of stars, diamonds with diamonds enclosed by triple brackets. There are ears on the upper lip which have a metal handle attached. It is in fair condition with some slight crackling or crazing in the bottom inside of the glazed area. I have been using it to ripen fruits and veggies on the kitchen counter. What do you know about this item? I will look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance. Neva

dear marcia, in answer to your question, the inside of the bowl is white. I also found a yellow pitcher about 5 inches tall with a green glaze over it. there are no markings anywhere on the pitcher, it has a small leaf design around the rim and vertical lines down the pitcher spaced about 1/3 to 1/2 inches apart. it also has a handle. thank you. sarah

Hello Marcia, I am new to yellow ware collecting. I'm not even sure if what I bought is yellow ware. I found a large bowl, yellow in color on the bottom is written mason-cash church gresley and a number 6 in the center. It has a geometic design on the out side of the bowl, squares with circles inside the squares and diamonds inside the circles on the lip of the bowl is a v pattern. It also has 3 spots on the bottom where it was stood or held while being fired. can you tell me anything about this large bowl. thank you

Please describe the rolling pin you are holding. I believe I just found one when junkin' in an old closed up building. I've not found any descriptions anywhere, but when I saw your picture, it looks just like it except the handles. The one I found has more of a curve toward the ceramic part (the perfect fit in the hand) and carved knobs (?) on the outer ends. The "pottery" part of the one I found is 9 and a half inches around and 7 and a half inches long. With handles, about fouteen inches long. I found the three tripod marks on one end. It is quite old, and exhibits little wear except the spiderweb- like fine cracking of the clear glaze. It is the color of egg custard with an uneven, handshaped look to it. The clear glaze is still so shiny, it looks polished. It has something inside, that makes a soft rattling sound when it's turned.

As long as the pottery is yelloware, the handles can be different and can have knobs at the end, it may be a piece of ceramic or wood caught inside...a nice find.

Hi Marcia, I recently acquired a yellow ware bowl at an auction and am very interested in understanding the age and value of the piece and was wondering if you could help me. Although it was listed as a "Rockingham bowl with registery number", I'm rather confused by the information I've read on the web and unfortunately I don't have a digital camera to send you a picture but here is a description: Edge to edge 9-1/2" diameter 4" high. 3 firing points both on the interior and bottom rim. The flat part of the bottom rim where its not glazed shows a deep mustard colored clay, the dripped and spotted parts of the glaze is a reddish-brown with a beautiful clear glaze over. There is no brown color on the underside within the bottom ring. Condition-wise the entire bowl is crazed but there are no chip in the glaze or cracks that I can see with the exception of right on the inside firing points. There isn't a makers mark but there is a handwritten number impressed in the clay...I believe it to be 168. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoyed reading your web page. I'm originally from Holbrook NY out on Long Island. Thanks, Chris

The lines are not perfectly straight but are symmetrical. They have an hour glass shape to them with the top being slightly larger than the bottom. one is 12" high and the other 9 1/2" high. I recently bought, in an antique store, 2 casserole pieces that were identified as "yellow ware." They are both an aqua or greenish color (labelled green by the store). One has a ribbed design, the other has concave round impressions on the lid. Both have USA, tho in different styles, marked on the bottom. I cannot find anything like them in any of the research I have done so far, but found your site and thought you might recognize them. I can send pictures if you need them. I'm curious to know more and to have an idea as to whether they are worth collecting more of or not. (I just bought them because the color works in my kitchen...!) It is kind of creamy tan in color with 3 rusty brown bands around it, one fat with a narrow one on either side, & the glaze on these bands seems to be flaked off in places. There is crazing throughout & the bottom has some flakes out of it as well. The mark is hard to make out, what I can see is a 14, & 2 L's with a line under them, The word oven & the word ware, pretty far apart. I'm sending you a few pictures. I found two yellow ware pie plates (at least I think they are yellow ware) at a yard sale along with an 8 and 1/2 inch dutch oven without the lid. The glaze is crackled in the dutch oven but there are no other flaws. The bottom of all the pieces have the word star in the center surrounded by the words fire clay acid proof. There are small handles on each of the pie plates. The glaze on the pie plates are not crackled and are in very good condition although it does appear the pieces were use to bake pies because there is faint staining on the outside of the plates. The pie plates measure 10". Could you give me an idea of the age (I found a 10" Dutch oven at another website that was identical to the smaller one I found that stated it was from the late 1800's to early 1900's.) and value? Hi Marcia, I've got 2 molds, one is yellow ware 6.5" across with what looks like a pineapple designs, and the other is 7 3/4" across but brown colored exterior and greyish inside with fruit design (plums or peaches?). I don't really know alot about this stuff so I'm trying to find history and value. I think they are in great shape. The yellow one has a couple of chips and a few rub marks, the brown one has crazing and some of the old batter baked on real good! Do you have an idea of how old they might be and what kind of value I might be looking at? I can send you pictures if you have the time. Thanks.

Janice, your pineapple mold is around turn of the century and in excellant shape, valued around $250.00. The other mold with the brown exterior is around the 40's and valued around $100.00, but the demanding price is the condition and rarity of the piece. Pineapple is good, because it means welcome and in the 1700 if you had a pineapple - you had some cash''''

HI MARCIA.I JUST FOUND YOUR WEB SITE AND ORDERED JOHN'S BOOK. TELL ME ABOUT THE LARGE BOWL THAT'S PICTURED ON YOUR WEB PAGE THAT'S ON THE BOTTOM ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT. I HAVE ONE AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT. THANKS,DAN

I think you are talking about the embossed batter bowl. These can be English if lightweight and the heavier ones are American. The turn of the century produced in bowls and batter bowls.

Hi Marcia, I beleive I have a Brush McCoy Dandyline yellow ware salt crock, but it is completely missing its wooden lid, and has a small hairine. I can't find a value for it anywhere, and was wondering if you could please help me. Thanks, Elaine

The Dandyline had the white band, and yes alot of lids were missing. Have a new one made, and even then with a hairline at best retail value is around 250. Marcia

Great pieces, I have had many sets and I do mention them in my article. They were giveaways for, I do believe, flour or syrup from Ohio. Have to look that up. 1920's and they are a very nice set; approximate retail value 300 to 500.

Hi, I have been collecting yellow ware for quite a while, and I just saw a bisquit jar, Hull mark, about 7" high and 5" wide, lid with a knob, around the jar was a raised scene of people and a church, some white in the raised scene. It was definetly old, slight chip on edge of top. I checked all my books and found nothing. It was priced at $195. Have you ever seen or heard of this item?. Thanks, Helen

Hi Helen when you called you didn't say it had the H mark on the bottom, because that is Hull and American, but probably the 50's. Chipped means the value is cut in half.

I purchased a piece of pottery today and although a piece was broken out and put back in (poorly)I think it might be an early piece. It looks like it was turned, and has a blue/yellow glaze of some kind, which is crazed inside and out, and some of the glaze has chipped off. I do have photos if that would help. It is about 13" high and has two small handles at the top. I think it is ovoid? shaped.

Blue-yellow glaze is usually not yellowware unless it was sponged or looks like chicken wire. Does It have the three marks at the bottom for the potters wheel? You can send me a photo and I might be able to help you more, Marcia

I have 4 nesting bowls which I just researched as being yellow ware. The large one is 10.25" across the top, the next 9.25, the next 8.25 and the small 6.25. The 2 middle size one have a 1/2" wide white band flanked by 2- 1/8" bands just under the rim. Any idea of when these might have been made and value? Thanks so much for answering and a great site!

I really need to see pictures but they are good bowls. The white band is very popular, but there are so many repro's at this time. Make sure they have the three points marks and they have the telltale age marks, and if they meet the criteria, they are the turn of the century and condition is the price value.

Hi Marcia, I'm new to yellowware and have become hooked. I've read your article and it referenced 3 nibs on the bottom of the bowl. Today I purchased two bowls. The first was labelled as being Hull, 8 1/4 inches. It has these nibs on the bottom. It has a stamp - USA - and a number that I can't make out. It's cream colored and has raised bands from the bottom up that are painted a salmon/pink color, then smooth thin lt blue, 1/2 inch salmon, then thin light blue again. The second bowl is a 9 inch, beautiful golden color with U.S.A stamped in the bottom. It has a wider rim with embossing, and embossing on the bowl. There is no slip. This was marked as being McCoy. Can you tell me if these makers are correct, and what value they might be? There aren't any cracks, chips, crazing on either piece. Thank you! I'm anxious to learn all I can. Deb

USA and Mccoy are around the 50's, good bowls and in good condition are good way to start a collection. Sometimes the salmon pink is a later bowl and because these are of later vintage I have a problem with value without pictures.

Hi Marcia, I inherited a McCoy cookie jar from my grandmother. I don't know much about McCoy items so I started searching on the internet and found your webpage. The cookie jar is very different looking. It's yellow and green. It looks like a panda bear hanging in some bambo trees. The tree trunk is actually where the cookies go. There is a lid, but it's chipped slightly. It kind of looks like a mushroom. There is a McCoy mark on the bottom. Have you ever heard or run across a cookie jar like this? Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you! Anne

Anne, Mccoy is much later yellowware if at all. Treasure your gift, but I do not think it is yellowware. Marcia

Hi Marcia, I don't have a specific question but wanted to connect as I collect yellowware (mostly with white slip bands)as well as blue and white stoneware, some graniteware and some textiles. I also love pine and painted furniture--though mine is of the late 1800's to early 1900's variety. My look is more "farmhouse" than early New England. I also love old painted farm signs--I have one advertising rabbits and one eggs. I will be heading your way (I hope) this summer to visit my daughter and grandkids in New Hampshire. I plan to do a roadtrip and antique along the way. My daughter by the way is also a horse person and I have purchased antique horse-related iron pieces and paintings for her. She just moved to New Hampshire this fall and has a stable but no horse yet. Hopes to by summer--the stable is ready and waiting. If you have any wide white slip banded yellowware I would be interested. I guess I could ask one question--tell about your horses. Thanks from the cold (below zero tonight) north country. Betsy

Hi Betsy, I bet we beat your temp in the mid-Hudson valley. It is suppose to go to 40 degrees below with the wind factor tonite. Social is 27 years old and now a super dressage horse and was performing on upper training. We gave up the cross country and hunting when my Darby died, and I was really hurting from all the falls. Darc'y is now 16 and a great thoroughbred, who I have trained from 8 years old and not a saddle on her back. Two shoes is a cross between a shire thoughbred and quarter horse and is a super 6 year old that we are starting to jump again, beginning dressage and winning. If only I was ten years younger, but we love our horses and if your daughter comes down this way we know some great ones. I only have small thin white rim bowls at present, but I do have one at home - wide white band and very mottled that I can take a picture of. I love it because looks so old. Be sure to call this summer and make an appointment so I can be there. Marcia

Hello Marcia, I hope you had a wonderful Holiday. I just acquired a very large yelloware bowl (14"). It has a narrow band of dark brown, with a thick band of white, and then another narrow band of dark brown. Unfortunately, there is a chip in the top and there is a hairline in the bowl. There is also crazing throughout. I believe it is a very old bowl. Can you give me an idea on what it might be worth, even with its boo-boos. I appreciate your help, and hope to talk to you soon. Regards, Lorrie

Laurie, are the bands brown or rust?. The rust bands are usually older then the brown bands. Brown banded pieces are from the 20's to 40's, rust bands are earlier. A 14 " yellow ware bowl is great, but the condition is what makes the price, and with the faults I would put it under $100. Marcia

Hi Marcia, My name is Robin and I have been collecting yellowware for about 1 year now. I have to admit, I am addicted. Still being new to yellowware, I do have 2 questions. I stumbled upon 2 pieces of yelloware and I was wondering if you could give me an idea of their value? The first one is a rolling pin which is in great condition. No chips, cracks, crazing and it does have a wonderful shine to it. It has the original handles and it does work. The second is a water cooler with a lid on it. It is in the shape of a keg and stands about 18 inches high. It does have the original spout. It's in great condition, no chips, cracks, crazing and has a wonderful shine. Neither piece has no discoloration. I was wondering if you could give me an idea on the value of it? I also just acquired 2 nappies (no rim on them) one is 11" and the other is 13" again, both in mint condition. What are your thoughts? Thanks for reading this email and I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks Robin

Robin, Your purchases sound wonderful. The nappie's without a rim usually are milkpans and lighter and straighter sides then a nappie. But great finds 200+. The water cooler I have never seen in yellowware only in chickenwire pottery from Ohio. The rolling pin a great find retailing at 450+. Marcia

Have you ever heard of a yellow ware mold with an elephant design embossed on it? I have heard of corn, and grapes and recently heard of the elephant. How much would one sell for? Thanks, Lynne
